Integrated coherent receivers

Coherent optical functions on-chip

We develop silicon photonic integrated coherent receiver circuits for high-capacity laser communications. Optical couplers, an MMI hybrid, Ge photodiodes and SiGe BiCMOS electronics are brought together in a compact architecture.

In the ORIONAS programme, LEO Space Photonics and its partners demonstrated more than 100 Gb/s coherent detection of single-polarization QPSK signals.

patented technology

Patented integrated coherent receiver architecture

LEO Space Photonics is the assignee of US Patent 12,598,003 B2, covering a coherent receiver photonic integrated circuit with a single multimode interference (MMI) optical hybrid, non-intersecting optical paths and uniform electrical connections.

optical hybrid

Single MMI coupler

A single MMI coupler acts as the 90-degree optical hybrid for mixing the received signal with a local oscillator.

WAVEGUIDE ROUTING

Non-intersecting paths

Four waveguides route hybrid outputs to four photodetectors without crossings.

ELECTRICAL OUTPUT

Balanced detection

Four on-chip Ge photodetectors form two balanced pairs with uniform electrical paths leading to the TIA circuits.
